Ideal coffee table size formula: Coffee Table Length = 2/3 × Sofa Length For spacing, keep the coffee table 12"–18" away from the sofa for comfortable legroom and accessibility.

Coffee tables are larger, placed in the center of the seating area for convenience. End tables (also called side tables) are smaller, placed beside sofas or chairs to hold drinks, lamps, or remote controls.

Your coffee table doesn’t have to match perfectly but should complement your sofa or TV stand. Mixing materials (e.g., a wooden table with a leather sofa) can create contrast, but aim for a harmonious color scheme and style that ties everything together.

Ideally, the coffee table’s height should be around 1–2 inches lower than the seat height of the sofa. This ensures a comfortable reach and visual balance.

Round tables are great for small spaces and homes with kids, as they eliminate sharp corners. Rectangular tables are more traditional and work well in larger rooms, offering more surface area and a structured look.

Wood: Sturdy and timeless, but can be scratched. Glass: Elegant but may require more maintenance and care. Metal: Highly durable and resistant to heat and scratches. Marble: Luxurious but can be prone to staining if not sealed properly.

A gap of 12"–18" between the coffee table and sofa is optimal. This provides enough space for movement while keeping the table within easy reach.

Look for rounded corners and sturdy bases to prevent tipping. Choose tip-resistant designs for added safety, and avoid heavy glass or sharp-edged tables that could pose risks to young children or pets.
